1. We opened up the long wall in the kitchen to accommodate a large sliding door, and incorporated a glazed door between the hallway and kitchen. This design allows natural light to flood into the hallway, while the new decking area adjacent to the sliding door creates a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, effectively expanding the sense of living area. The client may opt to replace the sliding door with a bi-fold door, depending on a comparative cost assessment.

2. We introduced a lobby space accessible from the hallway, serving as a transitional area leading to both the garden and the living and kitchen areas. The glazed doors in this space further enhance the natural light flowing into the hallway.

To align with the client’s brief, we focused on creating a comfortable and inviting living room that could easily accommodate guests. The existing layout, being long and narrow, presented a challenge, particularly with the placement of the doorway from the hallway, which disrupted the flow and made it difficult to arrange furniture effectively.

By relocating the entrance to the living room to the new lobby area, we were able to optimize the space and introduce a large U-shaped sofa configuration, seating up to 10 people. The sofa is centered around a striking feature wall that incorporates a log burner and a 60-inch TV, providing the perfect setting for cosy family nights, movie nights with friends, or relaxed gatherings.

Adjacent to the feature wall, we designed a built-in desk area with backlit shelving, creating a dedicated and comfortable workspace for the clients. The drawers below the desk offer storage for paperwork and a laptop when not in use, while the shelving provides an opportunity to display family photos and personal items, adding a homely touch to the space.

The new sliding door in the kitchen floods the space with natural light, creating a seamless connection to the outdoors. On sunny days, the area opens up for relaxed family breakfasts on the comfortable outdoor living space, while during winter, the curtains can be drawn to offer a warm, inviting atmosphere for family meals around the new eight-person dining table—ideal for hosting friends and family. We also reintroduced the chimney to install a log burner, adding a cosy touch for winter dining experiences.

The original utility space, now transformed into a lobby area, was underutilized. To optimize the layout, we relocated the washing machine and dryer into a small cupboard off the hallway, previously used for coat storage. This change enabled a smoother flow from the kitchen to the living space through the lobby.

A large kitchen island now serves as the primary work surface, with additional seating for two, ideal for casual breakfasts or snacks while watching TV. Depending on the client's preferences, the seating could be removed to improve circulation and access to the workspace.

Adjacent to the dining area, we have incorporated built-in kitchen cupboards to store less frequently used appliances and kitchen items. Alternatively, the client may opt for a large sideboard to suit their aesthetic and functional needs.
